“The cleanliness and conservation of the Yamuna River is not merely an emotional issue, but a national responsibility linked to the secure future of coming generations. The participation of both the government and society is essential”. This was stated by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who was addressing the Yamuna Sangam Festival, organized jointly by the Yamuna Parivar Council and the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti at the Gandhi Darshan complex in Rajghat on December 29, 2025 to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Saints and social activists from across the country participated in the event, where they deliberated on the cleanliness of the Yamuna. Foreign artists also presented Kathak, Odissi, and Kuchipudi dance performances.
The other dignitaries included MoS, Shri Harsh Malhotra, Swami Chidanand Saraswati Maharaj Muniji, Shri Vijay Goel Hon’ble Vice Chairman of GSDS, Shri C. S. Agrawal, and many other eminent guests. Shri Sanjeet Kumar, Director (In-charge), GSDS, was also present on the occasion, adding to the significance of the event. A Yamuna exhibition was also organized during the festival, highlighting the sanctity, cultural significance, and conservation of the Yamuna.
Motivating people for Yamuna cleanliness, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra said that the government has prepared a project to clean the Yamuna. STP plants will be installed on all drains. The installation of STP plants will begin next year.
Swami Chidanand Saraswati of Parmarth Niketan, who was present at the festival, said that the Yamuna is not just a source of water or a river; it is our lifeline. Its conservation is our responsibility. The Yamuna is deeply connected to the emotions of Indians. Every citizen has a moral and spiritual duty towards its cleanliness.
On this occasion, Kapil Garg, Director of the Parivar Council, said that “Our Yamuna, Our Responsibility” is not just a slogan, but a continuous public movement through which society is being united for the conservation of Mother Yamuna.
